Scale-up Hero of the Month: September 2019 – Gautier from Penneo

Every month, we at Statum award an employee at a scale-up company as ‘Scale-up Hero of the Month’. This month we have chosen an employee who has made an extraordinary contribution to the growth and company DNA over the last couple of months at Penneo: Gautier Garin.

Mikkel Clausen, Head of People & Culture at Penneo, has the following reason for the nomination of Gautier Garin:

“Penneo is made out of heros but we’d like to select Gautier Garin as our Scale-up Hero of The Month – maybe even year! This guy has made an amazing impact and we’d love to spot light that. He’s truly shown us the way armed with confidence and Rambo like execution power. Results are easy to see but we do know it’s been hard work!”.

I had a talk with Gautier to get to know him and his job at Penneo:

Tell me a little about yourself, Gautier.

My name is Gautier. I’m a French guy – originally from Lyon’s area – but I have been enjoying the Danish life for a couple of years now. I originally studied sciences with Applied Physics, but then, I moved into International Business & Management studies. I started my professional journey as a business developer for Trustpilot, helping to scale the company in Europe & US and after that I specialized within Digital Marketing.

Cool, what do you work with at Penneo?

I’m Head of Marketing & Digital. So I’m basically working with tons of stuff like content, lead generation and connecting departments (product, sales, customer success) together. After setting up the basics and taking things pretty much from scratch during the first 6 months, it’s now time to build the marketing team while scaling the company.

Sounds interesting! What is the best part of your job?

The trust and transparency from the co-founders and the board. I feel very privileged to be able to work under the best circumstances possible without almost no restriction. I can initiate a lot of processes and make things happen in a fast and efficient way. It motivates you to always go the extra mile when you can work in such conditions.

I can hear from Mikkel that you really make a difference at Penneo. What’s your ‘secret sauce’?

I guess it’s a mix of being able to see the bigger picture – where do we want to go and what are we trying to achieve – and at the same time being a good executor. If I don’t have team members who can do the tasks then I’m always ready to be hands on and execute myself. Setting up priorities and organizing processes are also something I’m good at, I guess.

Why did you choose to be a part of a scale-up like Penneo in the first place?

To be honest, it was kind of love at first sight with Penneo. From our first talk, I felt a strong connection, you know this feeling of being at the right place at the right time. That’s not the most common feeling so it was a pretty clear choice from both sides and I hope it continues like that.

What’s keeping you happy at Penneo?

Well, it’s just been a year and it went so fast! A lot have happened during the past year but even more is coming up. The feeling of going in the right direction and having a lot to do motivates me to continue that amazing adventure.

Mikkel has nominated you for Scale-up Hero of the Month with the following reason:

“Penneo is made out of heros but we’d like to select Gautier Garin as our Scale-up Hero of The Month – maybe even year! This guy has made an amazing impact and we’d love to spot light that. He’s truly shown us the way armed with confidence and Rambo-like execution power. Results are easy to see but we know it’s been hard work!”

How do you feel about these reasons?

Well, I can only feel thankful about that. There is no better feeling that knowing your colleagues appreciate to work with you and value what you do as an individual, even if the success of Penneo is mainly because we are a very strong and skilled team. I’m proud to be part of that team.

Finally, what is your best advice for making a difference in a growth company?

Hard to say, on my side I would say it’s to listen to your customers and truly understand why they work with you. Then make sure you are super sharp and professional when communicating that. Second point would be to never settle for a “good-enough-result.” Always go the extra mile because it is where the magic happens
